Michael Wilson qualified in Chemistry in 1968 and then went on to do a Masters Degree in Microbiological Chemistry and a PhD in Microbiology. After holding Lectureships in Microbial Biochemistry, Microbiology and Medical Microbiology he was appointed Lecturer in Bacteriology at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1983. In 1988 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and in 1992 to Head of the Microbiology department. Having been an Associate of the Royal College of Pathologists since 1981, he gained his Membership in 1991 and was elected to a Fellowship in 1997. He was promoted to Reader in Oral Microbiology in the University of London in 1993 and a Professor of Microbiology in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University College London in 1996. In recognition of his research achievements, Professor Wilson was awarded a DSc degree in 1999.
